Studying Together: A Path to Connection and Love

You arrive home in the late afternoon, having already completed all your tasks: you worked, took the children to school and extracurricular activities, organized the house and the menu, returned calls, went to the gym, prayed, fit in a doctor’s appointment, and even had coffee with a friend. And then, before dinner, what do you do? That’s right, you help your children with their homework.

You are ready to relax, your mind and body exhausted, but you still find the strength. I want to share what I have been feeling from this experience: it is deeply rewarding.
I don’t want to get into the fact that the educational system is completely debatable, and I believe it will take us many years to change it (I will write about this in another post too). But the simple fact that you stop everything you are doing, turn off your phone to help your child, because many times you need to focus again in that moment, to study once more and teach them, in this small instant, this complete presence is the greatest gesture of love we can give them.
Perhaps if there were no homework, we wouldn’t have this moment of connection. We wouldn’t turn off our phones or dedicate that half hour to watching them think, reason, and understand. We wouldn’t see their small hands writing carefully, erasing a mistake after we remind them not to scribble, or the relief on their face when the homework is done. We wouldn’t notice the joy when they finally understand what the teacher meant, or their growing confidence that they will succeed on the test. Sitting beside my children, I see these details, and it moves me to realize how quickly they are growing.
Children’s education is our duty as parents. It demands time, patience, and resilience every single day, and I won’t deny that it is so hard. But it is in these moments, when time seems to stop, that the real connection happens. And in that instant, we can feel all the love in the world.
Go forward with courage,
